Why can't alcoholics just stop?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

A year ago my older sister died of liver and kidney failure. She was 49 years old. After her husband died unexpectedly in 1994, my sister began drinking heavily. Everyone in the family tried to get her to recognize her problem and go to treatment, but she always refused. She always had to do things "her way", and going to a treatment program would have meant giving up some control. A year before she died, she did actually go to AA for a while and stayed sober for almost 100 days. Unfortunately she went back to drinking though, even heavier than ever before. Finally, she was admitted to a hospital with end-stage liver and kidney failure in February last year, and she died 10 days later.

My sister was not some uneducated, poor person. She had a bachelor’s degree and she lived in a fine home. But alcoholism was stronger than she was, and she was destroyed by it.

To this day I still can’t understand why addictions are so extremely difficult to overcome. Yes, yes I have heard that it is a disease, but still… most diseases have some kind of operation or drug to correct it, but with alcoholism there’s no surgery, no drug.

I miss my sister. I love her but now she is gone, forever, except in our hearts. She died a horrible death from a terrible illness. How could this have been avoided? What more could I have done to help her?

Are there any alternative treatments/cures for Diabetes?

      Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

In 1995 I suffered from acute pancreatitis. Surgeons removed 90% of my pancreas and this left me Type 2 diabetic. I was doing fine on pills until this past december my Endocrinologist decided to put me on Humulin R(about 15 units before meals) and and later on added Lantus(about 55 units 2x day) Insulins. In addition I’ve eaten healthier but I’ve gained about 20lbs. I really hate this and I want to get off insulin but doctors tell me that i had been using the pills (glyburide/metformin < and other variants of all these before that> and Actos) for too long and its not healthy for my liver. I’d prefer to not be on insulin dependency. I know there are stem cell studies and other research going on. But is there anything else I should be looking into ? Is insulin safe? The ingredients are horrific!
Has anyone had success with other methods???
I live in Arizona I’m a 44 year old male.
      Thanks for your help.

          anybody have advice for pancreatitus?

          Sunday, April 10th, 2011

last year, actually december of 05, i was rushed to the emergency room with stomach pains. i was diagnosed with pancreatitus. i got it from drinking. they told me my liver and kidneys were failing and my pancreas burst into my pelvis. they said the amount of alcohol i drank was crazy. by the way, i am only 27 years old. i was given a 50% chance to survive 3 days in the hospital and when i did make it, they told me i had a year and a half to live unless i changed my lifestyle. well, i quit drinking, its been 13 months, quit smoking, been 5 months, went on a strict diet and lost 90 pounds. i feel great. although i am starting to eat more lately and my stomach has been fine. what i want to know is how many people have this or know someone who has this. how has it affected there lives. and for the better? i know i am not the only one, but all the treatment classes i go to for alcoholism, i am the only one who had this happen. i would like to know others stories. thank you

What is the direct effect of heavy consumption of alcohol (alcoholism) and the chemotherapy drug carboplatin.?

                Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

My family member was diagnosed with larynx cancer (stage IV) and has completed the intensive chemotherapy round, and is going to be starting radiation with chemotherapy. Luckily he is doing well with the treatment and his tumor has shrunk. With all I know about this type of cancer and what was told to me by drs, I understand that this cancer was caused primarily because he smoked and drank heavily. He has stopped smoking, but is still in denial about the alcohol and refused to stop (he has been in treatment twice over the last 20 years, recently 5 years ago). Without using a crystal ball what are his chances after all treatment is complete and is expected to come out "cancer free" of a recurrance of this type of cancer, or another type of cancer? And what needs to be done to test his liver and heart after the effects of the chemo/radiation and alcohol consumption?
